About Borgo
What are the main landmarks in Borgo?
Borgo counts more churches than anything else. Santo Spirito in Sassia anchors the old hospital ground, Santa Maria in Traspontina faces the main approach, and the Church of Santi Michele e Magno stands behind them, while Santa Maria delle Grazie alle Fornaci fuori Porta Cavalleggeri marks the far edge. The museums that follow are unusually specialised: the Museo delle anime del Purgatorio, the Museo Storico Nazionale dell'Arte Sanitaria, and the Museo Storico dell'Arma dei Carabinieri.

What is the history of Borgo?
Rome gave the quarter formal standing in 1586, when Sixtus V redrew the rione limits and Borgo took the number R. XIV along with Ponte Sant'Angelo, the bridge Hadrian had raised in 134 to reach his mausoleum. Municipio I administers it. What grew here grew out of care for travellers and the sick: a hospital, its church, and the confraternities attached to them.
The Museo Storico Nazionale dell'Arte Sanitaria holds that medical record, and the Museo del Collegio Teutonico del Camposant keeps the archive of a long-resident foreign community.
