Lido di Ostia splits into two halves, Lido di Ostia Levante and Lido di Ostia Ponente, and the choice between them is a choice of walk. Levante gathers the seafront around Piazza Anco Marzio, where the Rome-Lido railway sets travellers down at Lido di Ostia Centro and the Lungomare Paolo Toscanelli runs past the bathing establishments to the Pontile. Ponente lies west of it.
Its streets run residential along Corso Duca di Genova and out to the Idroscalo at the mouth of the Tiber. If you have come for the excavations of Ostia Antica, they sit outside the quarter, inland beyond its northern edge.

What are the main landmarks in Lido di Ostia?
Lido di Ostia keeps its landmarks along the shore. The Pontile reaches out over the water from Piazza dei Ravennati, and Piazza Anco Marzio anchors the grid of streets set back behind the sand. Two churches mark the built quarter: Santa Maria Regina Pacis a Ostia Lido on Piazza Regina Pacis, and Santa Monica on the square that shares its name.
The towers are older. Tor San Michele stands on Via degli Atlantici and Tor Boacciana nearer the mouth of the Tiber. The excavations of Ostia Antica lie outside the quarter, in the neighbouring zone that carries that name.
What is the history of Lido di Ostia?
Lido di Ostia was founded in 1884, after the malarial marsh behind the shore was drained. Its first workers came from Ravenna, in Romagna, and Piazza dei Ravennati carries their name. Older work survives at the water's edge: Tor Boacciana and Tor San Michele replaced a river fort after the flood of 1557 pushed the Tiber off its course.
The Rome-Lido railway arrived in 1924. Fascist-era building gave the quarter its rationalist plan, and Via Cristoforo Colombo later ran a road in from the city. Axis forces destroyed the Roma bathing establishment and the old Ostia station in 1943.
