What are the main landmarks in Monti?
Few districts pack in more ancient Rome. The Colosseum rises at Monti's southern edge, with the Arch of Constantine and the Arch of Titus marking the route into the Roman Forum. Northwest run the Imperial fora, where Trajan's Column still records the emperor's wars in carved relief.
Uphill, the church of San Pietro in Vincoli crowns the Esquiline, and the buried halls of the Domus Aurea, Nero's Golden House, lie beneath the slope. Stretches of the Servian Wall trace the city's earliest defences.
What is the history of Monti?
This ground predates Rome's walls. Emperors raised the Imperial fora and Trajan's Column on the level ground here, and Nero threw the Domus Aurea across the hillside after the fire of his reign. When the empire faded, the valley of the Roman Forum silted into pasture.
Rome reorganised its medieval rioni around 1300, and Monti, the name meaning the hills, became the first of them. Craftsmen and innkeepers later settled the lanes below the ruins.
