What are the main landmarks in Esquilino?
The hill carries some of Rome's oldest churches. San Pietro in Vincoli stands above the Colosseum, and the medieval church of Santa Prassede stands nearby, while Santa Croce in Gerusalemme closes the rione's eastern end beside the ancient arches of Porta Maggiore. Below ground spreads the Domus Aurea, the palace of the emperor Nero, with the Baths of Trajan raised over its buried halls.
The Colosseum and the Arch of Constantine sit just downhill.
What is the history of Esquilino?
Imperial Rome shaped the hill first. After the fire of the first century, Nero laid out the Domus Aurea across its slopes, and within decades the emperor Trajan buried much of that palace beneath a vast public bath. Christian Rome built over the pagan ground, raising San Pietro in Vincoli and other early churches on the heights.
Sections of the Servian Wall, the ancient city's defensive barrier, still stand on the hill. The modern rione was laid out in 1874.
