Two monuments from the age of Augustus anchor the rione: the Mausoleum of Augustus, his great circular tomb, and the Ara Pacis, the carved marble altar of peace. The eastern flank rises with the Spanish Steps, the wide staircase spilling down to Piazza di Spagna. Walk south.
Across the old Campus Martius wait the Pantheon and the long oval of Piazza Navona, while the Trevi Fountain sits a few streets to the east of the steps.

Rome carves its old core into rioni. Campo Marzio is the fourth, part of Municipio I, badged with a silver crescent on a blue field. The rione spreads over the northern part of the ancient Campus Martius, an open plain the early city kept clear beyond its built-up streets.
Augustus left his mark. His circular Mausoleum of Augustus rose here as an imperial tomb, and the Ara Pacis, the altar of peace, stood close beside it. Far later the Spanish Steps climbed its eastern slope.
