What are the main landmarks in Campo Marzio?
The rione's churches include Santa Maria del Popolo, Santa Maria dei Miracoli, Santa Maria in Montesanto, Trinità dei Monti and the basilica of Santi Ambrogio e Carlo al Corso. Palaces line its streets. Palazzo Ruspoli and the Casa di Goethe stand on via del Corso, Palazzo Borghese on its own piazza, the Accademia di belle arti on via di Ripetta, and Villa Medici on viale della Trinità dei Monti.
What is the history of Campo Marzio?
The rione covers part of the ancient Campus Martius, a plain sacred to Mars and used for military drill. The Mausoleum of Augustus and the Ara Pacis stood at its northern end. In the Middle Ages the name covered the whole settled left bank of the Tiber from the foot of the Quirinal, then the most populous part of Rome.
Popes later cut straight streets. Paul II straightened via del Corso, Leo X traced via di Ripetta in 1518 and Clement VII via del Babuino. Between 1926 and the early 1930s about 120 houses were pulled down to clear the ground around the Mausoleum.
