Beneath and around Casal Bertone lie the Catacomb of San Lorenzo, the Catacomb of Novatian and the Catacomb of Saint Castulus, early-Christian cemeteries cut into the ground below the Tiburtino. The Torrione Prenestino, the drum of a circular Roman mausoleum, rises near the Prenestina.
Funerary monuments continue at the Columbarium of Largo Preneste and the Sepolcro di largo Talamo. Churches anchor the living quarter too. The parish church of Santa Maria Consolatrice al Tiburtino stands at its heart, while Sant'Elena and San Leone I serve the streets toward Porta Prenestina.
What is the history of Casal Bertone?
Burial came first. Long before any housing, the slopes along the Tiburtino and the Prenestina carried Roman tombs and the early-Christian catacombs of San Lorenzo, Novatian and Saint Castulus, dug for the dead leaving the city. The Torrione Prenestino preserves the core of one such Roman mausoleum.
Casal Bertone itself took shape much later, and the modern quarter was set out as one of Rome's administrative zones in 1977.
