About Prati
What are the main landmarks in Prati?
Castel Sant'Angelo anchors the riverside edge. The round fortress, raised first as the mausoleum of Hadrian, stands at the crossing that links Prati to the historic centre, and from there the great monuments of old Rome open one after another across the river. The Pantheon and Piazza Navona sit close together on the far bank.
So do the Spanish Steps. The Ara Pacis and the Mausoleum of Augustus line the riverside walk north, and Santa Maria del Popolo closes the route at its top. The reach is unusual.
What is the history of Prati?
Prati is a modern addition to Rome's old core. The area took shape as building spread beyond the river, and in 1921 it was constituted as the 22nd rione, the last of the historic rioni to be drawn. For decades it sat within Municipio XVII, grouped with Borgo and the quartieri of Trionfale and Della Vittoria.
That changed in 2013. Since then the rione has belonged to Municipio I, the central district that gathers Rome's oldest quarters. Its administrative story is short but well documented.
