What is the history of Trastevere?
The name points across the river. Trastevere takes its name from the Latin trans Tiberim, meaning beyond the Tiber, the west-bank quarter that Rome counted as the thirteenth of its medieval rioni within Municipio I. Its parish churches, among them Santa Cecilia in Trastevere, grew from the early Christian city. Later the Renaissance left Villa Farnesina and the Tempietto at San Pietro in Montorio on the higher ground.
