One column names the whole rione. The Column of Marcus Aurelius stands in Piazza Colonna, the main square, and the rione took its name from it rather than from any church or gate. Trinità dei Monti, Sant'Andrea delle Fratte, Sant'Atanasio, San Giacomo in Augusta and Gesù e Maria are the churches within its bounds.
The Keats-Shelley Memorial House is not one of them. Older still are the Gardens of Lucullus, a Roman estate whose ground lay on the high side of the third rione.
What is the history of Colonna?
Colonna is the third rione of Rome, inside Municipio I, and sits at the historic centre. Its name comes from a monument. The Column of Marcus Aurelius, standing in Piazza Colonna, gave the rione its title when the divisions of the medieval city were fixed around 1300, and the square has carried the name since.
The Gardens of Lucullus predate all of it, and Trinità dei Monti, Sant'Andrea delle Fratte and Gesù e Maria came with the church building of later centuries.
