What is the history of Garbatella?
The catacombs came first. Long before Garbatella existed as a name on the Rome comune's maps, the Catacomb of Commodilla and the Catacomb of Saint Thecla were cut into the ground that the quarter now covers. The urban zone itself was drawn in 1977, inside Municipio VIII and the wider Ostiense quarter.
Later came the parish churches, San Benedetto and the Corpus Domini church among them, and later still the Monumento ai Caduti di Nassiriya.
