About Parione
What are the main landmarks in Parione?
The Museo di Roma occupies a palace on the rione's main square, while the Museo di Scultura Antica Giovanni Barracco keeps a smaller collection of ancient carving a short walk away. Between them the parishes take over. San Lorenzo in Damaso, San Pantaleo and San Tommaso in Parione mark the older parish network, with Natività di Gesù standing among them.
Sant'Antonio dei Portoghesi and San Nicola dei Lorenesi round out the list. Only the name recalls the vanished Parietone.
What is the history of Parione?
A wall gave the name. Romans called the huge block of ancient masonry standing in the area the Parietone, and from that nickname the quarter became Parione, the wall itself perhaps belonging to the stadium of Domitianus. Rome has listed it among the rioni since 1300, under Municipio I. Palaces and parish churches replaced whatever the ruin had been, and the Museo di Roma occupies one of them.
