Where to stay in Sallustiano

Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.

Two poles pull at a stay here: the Galleria Borghese and the Villa Borghese Pinciana at one end, and Porta Pia with the Museo Storico dei Bersaglieri at the other. The rione is small. Its whole area falls inside Municipio I, so a room anywhere in it keeps the Boncompagni Ludovisi Decorative Art Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome, and the church of San Caio within an easy walk.

You want this rione if galleries and quiet streets matter more than sleeping on top of the ancient centre of Rome.

About Sallustiano

What are the main landmarks in Sallustiano?

Antiquity sits under the streets. The Gardens of Sallust gave the rione its name, and the register adds the Temple of Venus Erycina, the Mausoleum of Lucilius Paetus, and the Catacomb di Trasone beneath the later blocks. Museums carry the rest: the Galleria Borghese and the Villa Borghese Pinciana, the Boncompagni Ludovisi Decorative Art Museum, and the Museo Storico dei Bersaglieri beside Porta Pia.

San Caio anchors the parish roll.

What is the history of Sallustiano?

The rione was formally constituted in 1921. Its name reaches much further back, to the Gardens of Sallust, the ancient estate that stood on this ground long before the modern street grid was laid across it. Burial ground runs beneath it: the Catacomb di Santa Felicita, the Catacomb of San Panfilo, and the Hypogeum of via Livenza are all listed here, alongside the Tomb of Quintus Sulpicius Maximus.

Municipio I administers it.
