Antiquity is stacked close here. The Theatre of Marcellus, the Porticus Octaviae, the Temple of Portunus, the Arch of Janus and the Great Altar of Hercules all belong to the ancient city, and the Cloaca Maxima runs beneath it. Churches came afterwards, among them Sant'Angelo in Pescheria, San Nicola in Carcere, Santa Maria in Campitelli and San Carlo ai Catinari.
The Capitoline Museums stand above the rest. Circus Flaminius, the Temple of Bellona and the Sacred Area of Sant'Omobono survive only as fragments.

The arms of Sant'Angelo show an angel on a red ground holding a palm branch in its left hand, and a second version gives the angel a sword in the right hand and a scale in the left. The rione is numbered eleventh. Its ground was in use long before that count began, with the Sacred Area of Sant'Omobono and the Great Altar of Hercules among the oldest cult sites recorded in it.
Municipio I covers it, and the rione took its place in the roll around 1300.
