Areia Preta puts its beds in tower blocks. Rooms gather along the streets running down from Portas do Cerco, the land gate into Zhuhai, so a bag dropped in Areia Preta sits minutes from the border queue. Fai Chi Kei keeps the parish's western shore, while Iao Hon lies inland behind the same wall of towers. Quiet is not on offer.
The Historic Centre of Macau lies a taxi ride south, which suits you if old squares matter more than an early crossing.

What are the main landmarks in Areia Preta?
The quarter keeps no monuments. Areia Preta was built as working ground, industrial sheds and housing blocks side by side, so its fixed points are the ones that traffic uses rather than the ones guidebooks photograph. Portas do Cerco anchors the north, the land gate into Zhuhai.
The towers thin towards Iao Hon and Fai Chi Kei, the other two quarters of Nossa Senhora de Fátima. The old squares are all south of here.
What is the history of Areia Preta?
The name means black sand. Areia Preta says that in Portuguese and 黑沙環 says it in Chinese, one stretch of the peninsula's northeastern edge carrying two names from two administrations. Factories and flats went up together.
The quarter grew inside Nossa Senhora de Fátima, the parish at the top of the peninsula, and it took the traffic of Portas do Cerco as its daily weather. Macau passed to Chinese rule in 1999.
