The land itself is the landmark. Cotai is a flat sheet of reclamation laid over the Seac Pai Van, and the two shores it welded together, Taipa on one side and Coloane on the other, still read as separate hills at either end. Between them the ground runs level and made.
The contrast between the two is what a visitor actually sees: worn island slopes at the edges, engineered flat through the middle.
What is the history of Cotai?
Tide ran through here once. The channel between Taipa and Coloane lay open over the Seac Pai Van until the filling began, and by 2005 the reclamation had welded two separate islands into a single landmass. Its name records that merger: Co from Coloane, Tai from Taipa.
The Special Administrative Region of Macau counts the result as one island, Cotai Island, lying apart from the Macau Peninsula to the north.
