What are the main landmarks in São Lourenço?

St Lawrence's Church gives the parish both its names. Sailors' families once climbed its terrace steps to watch for returning ships, which is how the Chinese name 風順堂區, the hall of the favourable wind, attached itself to the whole district. Uphill sit the Dom Pedro V Theatre and the Sir Robert Ho Tung Library, both on Largo de Santo Agostinho.

St. Joseph's Seminary and Church stands behind them. At the Barra end the A-Ma Temple faces the inner harbour.

What is the history of São Lourenço?

Jesuits raised the first St Lawrence's Church here in the sixteenth century, in timber, on a slope that then looked straight out over the Praia Grande bay before any of the water was reclaimed. Portuguese officials and merchants built along that shore. The seminary followed in 1728.

Reclamation later pushed the sea back, leaving the church inland while the lanes above it kept their old lines. In 2005 the church, the Dom Pedro V Theatre and Largo de Santo Agostinho were inscribed with the Historic Centre of Macau on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Where is São Lourenço?

Roughly a square kilometre of ground, the parish drops from Penha Hill to the Avenida da Praia Grande, with Barra and the harbour mouth at its southern tip.
