The quarter is small, and nearly every bed sits within a few minutes of the A-Ma Temple. Lanes climb the lower slope of Penha Hill, where rooms stay quiet once the tour coaches have left the temple forecourt and the traffic along the waterfront thins. Barra Hill rises behind.
Rooms on the water side look across to the Macao Maritime Museum and the basin of the old shipyard. Choose Barra if you want the harbour mouth rather than a base further inland on the Macau Peninsula.

What are the main landmarks in Barra?
The A-Ma Temple is the anchor of the quarter, its halls and shrines climbing the rock in stages behind a gate that opens onto the square by the water. Coiled incense burns under the roofs. The Macao Maritime Museum faces that gate from across the square, and the slipways of the old government shipyard run along the shoreline beside it.
Inland the ground rises fast. Barra Hill stands directly behind the temple, with Penha Hill east of the lanes, so the quarter keeps to the low strip between the slopes and the water.
What is the history of Barra?
Barra takes its Portuguese name from the narrow entrance of the harbour beside it, and Chinese speakers know the quarter as 媽閣, after the temple. The A-Ma Temple has stood above the water for several hundred years, and the fishermen's houses that gathered below it made up the A-Ma fishing village. Little else stood here.
Only in the later nineteenth century did the quarter spread beyond the temple ground, once the government shipyard opened on the shore in front of it. In 1993 the sight of incense smoke over the temple roofs was written into the Eight Views of Macau.

Barra holds the south-western end of the Macau Peninsula, low ground beside the water west of Barra Hill and Penha Hill.
