Each area has its own feel; here's who each one suits.
The choice runs between Iao Hon's own blocks and the Historic Centre of Macau, at opposite ends of the peninsula. Iao Hon and Areia Preta run together as one grid of streets, and a room in either leaves the Portas do Cerco within a short walk of the door. The old quarter is the trade-off.
Beds inside the listed boundary put the monuments at the doorstep, while the northern end keeps the crossing closer and the sightseeing further off.

What are the main landmarks in Iao Hon?
The fixed points here sit on the boundary. The Portas do Cerco (關閘) closes the top of the peninsula immediately beyond Iao Hon, and it marks the end of the built ground running north. Areia Preta carries the other edge.
Anything on the standard sightseeing list, the Ruins of St. Paul's, Senado Square, the A-Ma Temple, belongs to the Historic Centre of Macau, further down the peninsula rather than a walk away.
What is the history of Iao Hon?
Macau grew from the south. Portuguese traders settled the tip of the peninsula in the sixteenth century, and the quarter they raised there is the ground the Historic Centre of Macau now protects. Iao Hon lies at the opposite end.
Its streets belong to the later build-out of the peninsula's northern end, which runs up to the 關閘 with Areia Preta alongside it.
