What are the main landmarks in Coloane?
No single monument fixes the parish. Coloane reads as a set of named places instead, with Vila de Coloane carrying the area's own name and Hac Sa, Cheoc Van and Ká-Hó scattered across the ground around it. Most of the going is on foot.
The Cantonese name Lou Wan covers the whole of it, and the traditional civil parish of São Francisco Xavier follows exactly the same boundary, so parish and place describe one another.
What is the history of Coloane?
Administration came before tourism here. The traditional civil parish of São Francisco Xavier drew boundaries that match Coloane's own exactly, which is why one name has long served for both the parish and the place. Reclamation changed the rest.
Cotai was built largely on made ground, and that belt carries the road down from Taipa into the parish, so the settlements at the far end lost their separation without losing their names. Vila de Coloane and Ká-Hó still carry theirs.
Where is Coloane?
Coloane covers about 7.6 square kilometres at the far south of Macau, with the reclaimed flats of Cotai to the north and water around most of the rest.
