What are the main landmarks in Patane?
白鴿巢公園 is the landmark that gave Patane its first meaning, because the name 沙梨頭 originally described the hill the park occupies. The park keeps the high ground. Two readings of that rise survive: some hold that its outline resembled a sand pear, others that a large rock at the water's edge carried the likeness instead.
Beyond the park, Patane keeps its edges rather than its monuments, running from 林茂塘 down to the wooded slope.
What is the history of Patane?
The name records a shoreline: 沙梨頭 was first attached to the hill inside 白鴿巢公園, and only later spread across the ground between that slope and 林茂塘. Two stories explain it. The older reading is botanical, taking the sand pear for the shape that the hill, or a shore rock, once recalled.
The other traces the ending back to 兜, a 疍家 word for a bay, which would make Patane a name given from the water rather than from the slope above it.

Patane covers the north-western part of the Macau Peninsula (澳門半島), the ground lying south of 林茂塘 and north of the 白鴿巢公園 hill.
