What are the main landmarks in Poznań Old Town?
Museum doors open straight onto the Old Market Square. The Muzeum Instrumentów Muzycznych w Poznaniu and the Poznań Croissant Museum work out of merchant houses there, while Pałac Górków keeps its collections a block off the frontage. Poznań Fara stands just south.
The Royal Castle holds the high ground to the west, and the Royal-Imperial Route threads past the National Museum in Poznań on its way out to the Archcathedral Basilica beyond the old walls.
What is the history of Poznań Old Town?
The charter of 1253 set out the plan this neighbourhood still keeps. Merchant plots were measured around the Old Market Square, the Royal Castle rose on the ground to its west, and a ring of walls fixed how far the medieval town could grow. Poznań Fara came much later.
Stare Miasto has carried the name ever since, though the same words are also given to the wider administrative district reaching across most of the city centre and the northern parts of Poznań.
