Everything here is an estate with a name. Osiedle Armii Krajowej, Osiedle Bohaterów II Wojny Światowej and Osiedle Jagiellońskie are among the named blocks that make up Rataje, and the fabric is dense multi-family housing throughout. The plan was for a city inside a city. The original scheme counted twenty-seven housing units, each sized to fill a seven-class school, and the whole of Rataje was meant to hold well over a hundred thousand people.
Its western boundary is the Warta. Rondo Rataje sits at the old village site, and Osiedle Żegrze forms the second council area of the district.

About Rataje
What are the main landmarks in Rataje?
The old village is under an estate. Rataje stood about 1.5 km southeast of Poznań's Stary Rynek, near what is now Rondo Rataje, between ulica Ludwika Zamenhofa and ulica Bolesława Krzywoustego, which is exactly where Osiedle Piastowskie stands. People were here before that.
Archaeologists have identified several sites on the medieval Rataje ground with finds from the 11th to the 14th century, near the present Most świętego Rocha and on the terrace slope by Osiedle Piastowskie. The name records the work. A rataj was a hired hand taken on for field work and above all for ploughing, which is what the Latin aratorum campum of 1253 also means, the field of the ploughman.
What is the history of Rataje?
The first record calls it a village of settlers. Rataje appears in a Latin document of 1245, known from a 15th-century copy, as Villa Colonorum, from villa for a village and colonus for a tenant bound to the land he farmed. The second record names the ploughing.
In 1253 it is aratorum campus, from campus for a flat open field and arator for one who ploughs, and the modern name comes from rataj, the hired man taken on for that work. The spellings run for five centuries. Rataie in 1396, Rathaye in 1406, Ratage in 1420, Rathagye in 1447, Rathage in 1473, Rataye in 1519, then Polish inflections in 1561 and Rataie again in 1580 and through the 1620s.
Occupation brought foreign names. The German administration used Rattay and Rattei in 1888 during the partitions, shortened the name to Rataj between the wars, and imposed Pflugdorf during the occupation from 1939 to 1945. Estates came last.
The old village between ulica Ludwika Zamenhofa and ulica Bolesława Krzywoustego went under Osiedle Piastowskie, and Rataje is now two council areas of blocks.
