What are the main landmarks in Nowe Miasto?

Ostrów Tumski carries the Archcathedral Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul, traditionally the burial place of Mieszko I and Bolesław Chrobry. The Golden Chapel sits inside. Brama Poznania faces the island across the Cybina, an interactive heritage centre, while Rynek Śródecki holds a three-dimensional mural and the church of St. Margaret.

The Knights Hospitaller raised the church of St. John of Jerusalem at Komandoria, among the first Polish churches built in brick. Lake Malta takes the rest: Termy Maltańskie on the north shore, the Maltanka narrow-gauge railway along the water, and Nowe Zoo on the hill of Biała Góra.

What is the history of Nowe Miasto?

Nowe Miasto is a twentieth-century name laid over Poznań's oldest ground. Ostrów Tumski held a Piast stronghold from the tenth century, and Śródka, a town in its own right before 1233, stayed separate until Prussian administration folded it into Poznań in 1800. Piotrowo and Berdychowo followed in 1896. A wider annexation in 1925 brought in Komandoria and Rataje, and Janikowo came only in 1987.

The dzielnica itself dates from 1954, when Poznań was cut into five governmental districts, and it was dissolved in 1990 though its outline still orders the city's offices.

Where is Nowe Miasto?

Nowe Miasto takes in everything east of the Warta in Poznań. Ostrów Tumski sits at its western tip, where the Cybina branches from the main channel, while the Główna joins the Warta further north and the district line runs east to Swarzędz. Głuszyna reaches farthest south.
