What is Taitung known for?
Taitung is the quiet corner of Taiwan's wild southeast. On the Pacific shore below the mountains, far from the crowded west, it is a land of indigenous villages and open country, and it keeps the great prehistoric site of Beinan, the hot springs of Zhiben, the balloon festival on the highland, and the islands of Green Island and Orchid Island out at sea. The Pacific breaks on the coast.

What are the main landmarks in Taitung?
The prehistoric site of Beinan is the treasure of Taitung. The ancient stone remains of a lost people, the slate coffins and standing stones dug from the ground, are kept in the great prehistory museum, the emblem of the region, above the town. Hot springs steam in the hills.
The waters of Zhiben rise in a forested valley nearby, while the seaside temple, the coastal arches of Sansiantai, and the ferries to the islands mark the country around Taitung.
What is the history of Taitung?
Taitung was long a land of indigenous peoples. The Amis, the Puyuma, and the Bunun lived along this coast and in the valley for thousands of years, and one of the great prehistoric cultures of the island left its stones at Beinan. The tribes held the coast.
Long before the Chinese came, the peoples of the east farmed and fished this shore, cut off by the mountains from the west. The Chinese settled the east late. Only in the last century or two did Han farmers and the Japanese reach this far coast, drawn by the rice land and the harbours, and the town of Taitung grew as their port and market.
The east stayed quiet and green. Cut off by the ranges from the crowded west, Taitung kept its open country, its hot springs, and its native villages, and it grew known for the balloons that fill its summer sky. The Pacific still rolls on the shore.
Taitung keeps its valley and its coast on the eastern sea.
Where is Taitung?
Taitung lies on the southeast coast of Taiwan, where the great rift valley reaches the Pacific. The city stands on a plain by the sea at the foot of the valley, between the high Central Range and the low Coastal Range, with rice fields and the ocean spreading around it. Steep green ranges rise inland.

What is the climate of Taitung?
Taitung has a warm, wet tropical climate. Hot humid summers and mild winters cross the coast, cooled by the Pacific wind, with a warm sea and heavy rain when the typhoons come in late summer. The ocean keeps the winters mild.

How do you get to Taitung?
Taitung lies on the far southeast coast of Taiwan, cut off from the west by the mountains. Trains run down the east coast and a rail line loops around the south, and its airport links the main cities. Boats cross to Green Island and Orchid Island.
