Terdonk, Gent — Area Guide & Where to Stay

A ferry slip and two streets of houses are what is left of Terdonk, a hamlet of Gent on the west bank of the Kanaal Gent-Terneuzen.
About Terdonk

Where to stay in Terdonk
Each area has its own feel; here's who each one suits.
Terdonk keeps no rooms of its own, so a stay means the Gent centre near the Vrijdagmarkt, some eleven kilometres up the canal. The alternative is Evergem, where Doornzele Dries runs west from the end of Terdonkplein. Take the nearer bed if you mean to ride the Veerdienst Terdonk across the canal in the morning, or if work at the Kluizendok brought you north.
Gent has the museums and the late trains.
About Terdonk
What are the main landmarks in Terdonk?
Terdonk's landmark is a working ferry. The Veerdienst Terdonk crosses the Kanaal Gent-Terneuzen, run by the Agentschap Maritieme Dienstverlening en Kust and open to walkers, cyclists, and cars. Terdonkplein and the Terdonkkaai hold the remaining houses in one line along the bank, with Doornzele Dries running west from the southern end into Evergem.
East of the canal the Rodenhuizedok was cut in 1970, named for Rodenhuize, a hamlet that stood further south.
What is the history of Terdonk?
Terdonk was a hamlet of Kluizen, east of Doornzele on the road to Sint-Kruis-Winkel. Kluizen is a deelgemeente of Evergem. The Kanaal Gent-Terneuzen, opened under Willem I in 1827, cut the hamlet in two, and in 1865 the railway from Gent to Terneuzen sliced the same ground.
The Atlas der Buurtwegen spelled it Terdonck, Terdonk, and Terdonckt. From 1888 the Regatta van Terdonk was rowed here each Ascension Day, the biggest rowing regatta in Belgium until the course moved to the Watersportbaan in 1955. Gent annexed ground in 1927 and again at the end of 1964 for the Kluizendok.
Where is Terdonk?
Terdonk lines the west bank of the Kanaal Gent-Terneuzen, Doornzele Dries at its back, the Kluizendok to the north and Sint-Kruis-Winkel across the water.
