Arab Ahmet is laid out on narrow parallel streets inside the western ramparts, and the stone houses along them are homes rather than rooms. Salahi Şevket Street, once Victoria Street, carries the quarter from the Arabahmet Mosque toward the Paphos Gate, with Tanzimat Street and then Zahra Street stepping out beside it toward the walls. The buffer zone starts below Zahra Street.

What are the main landmarks in Arab Ahmet, Nicosia?
Arabahmet Mosque stands at the head of Salahi Şevket Street, its present building raised in 1845 on the site of a medieval church. One hemispherical dome covers the prayer hall, three smaller ones the porch, and four more the corners, the only Turkish domes on Cyprus. Fragments of that church still lie about the enclosure, among them stones naming Hugh de Mimars in 1324 and Gaspar Mavroceni of the Venetian family in 1402.
The Dervish Pasha Mansion sits south on Beliğ Paşa Street. Its door carries the date 1801, stone below and adobe above, with separate entrances once serving the harem and the selamlık. A museum since 1988.
What is the history of Arab Ahmet, Nicosia?
Arab Ahmet housed the kadis and pashas of Ottoman Nicosia, who wanted the Saray close and the evening wind off Morphou Bay. The quarter and its mosque take the name of Arab Ahmet Pasha, a commander in the 1570 conquest. Armenian Cypriots were present from that conquest.
A minority until the 1920s, they were the majority by the 1950s, when Victoria Street became a centre of culture and business. The community was known for jewellery, tailoring, photography, and carpet selling. They fled in the violence of 1963.
An order of 1923 pushed the boundary past the walls, and the Arabahmet Rehabilitation Project was drawn up in 1984.
