Kaimakli holds few beds of its own, and most visitors book inside the walls of Nicosia and come out here by day. Masons' houses fill it, not hotels. It suits you if you would rather have the shopfronts of Agiou Ilarionos, the Grammiko Parko walk along the old railway bed, and a Sunday liturgy at Agia Varvara than a lobby and a lift.
Pontikides sits quieter at the northern end.

About Kaimakli
What are the main landmarks in Kaimakli?
Kaimakli keeps two old churches. Agia Varvara stands on Agias Varvaras street in the Pontikides corner, and among its icons is a Virgin painted in 1763. Archangelos Michail, on Archangelou, doubled as the burial ground.
Grammiko Parko threads more than a kilometre of the old Cyprus Government Railway bed, past the corner of Synergasias Street and Agiou Ilarionos where the halt once stood. Regis, an ice cream maker founded in 1952, works out of 1 Synergasias Street.
What is the history of Kaimakli?
Kaimakli answered to the name Misokelevsi under Lusignan, Venetian, and Genoese rule. Latin architects taught its masons to cut stone, and the quarter's men worked the carvings of Agia Sophia, the cathedral that later became the Selimiye Mosque. Earth dug at Chandakas raised the Frankish walls that ringed Nicosia from 1383, and the same seam fed brick kilns and household pottery for centuries after.
In 1881 builders from Kaimakli roofed over the abandoned Pediaios bed and laid Hermes Street, taking shops in payment. Nicosia absorbed the village in 1968.

Kaimakli lies northeast of the walls of Nicosia, with Omorfita on its western side, Aglantzia to the south and Mia Milia beyond the Green Line.
