The church gives the name. It was built in 1854 with fragments of an older building set into its walls, it holds relics of St Cassian, a Roman saint of the fourth century, and it is the only church in Cyprus still dedicated to him. A silver helmet of the saint is kept there and was long recommended against headaches.

Kafesli was the older name. It means lattice, and the quarter carried it before the church of St Cassian gave it the one it uses now, which is Aykasyano in Turkish and Ayios Kassianos in the English of older works. The feast day falls on the twenty-ninth of February.
