About Yenişehir, Nicosia

Where to stay in Yenişehir, Nicosia

The right area depends on your trip — here's what each neighbourhood is best for.

Yenişehir keeps few beds of its own, a quarter of ministry offices and school yards rather than a hotel strip. Most visitors sleep inside the walls of Nicosia. The quarter suits you if an early departure from Lefkoşa Otobüs Terminali matters more than a room among the monuments, since that terminal sits close to the eastern edge of Yenişehir.

Bays open onto Gazeteci Kemal Aşık Caddesi. From the terminal the Kyrenia Gate lies just under a kilometre south, and beyond it the old walled city opens on foot.

About Yenişehir, Nicosia

What are the main landmarks in Yenişehir, Nicosia?

Yenişehir carries the working buildings of North Nicosia rather than its monuments, and the Kyrenia Gate stands on the quarter's southern boundary with İbrahimpaşa, cut through the Venetian walls in 1567 and repaired by the Ottomans in 1821. Girne Kapısı is its Turkish name. The British left their own mark, cutting the date 1931 and the initials GVRI into the stone.

Lefkoşa Türk Belediyesi, the Turkish municipality of North Nicosia, sits on Atatürk Caddesi, and Yenişehir Camii marks the junction of that avenue with Şehit Ecvet Yusuf Caddesi.

What is the history of Yenişehir, Nicosia?

Yenişehir was bare ground north of the walls of Nicosia until the first houses went up between 1930 and 1945. The Cyprus Government Railway had already crossed it, its Famagusta to Nicosia section opening on 21 October 1905, and the line's last train pulled out of Nicosia at 14:57 on 31 December 1951. Abdi İpekçi Caddesi runs along that trackbed, and the station building still stands beside it.

Tren Yolu Sokak keeps the name. Olimpiada Neapolis, founded in 1951, had its seat in the quarter and re-formed in the south of the island after 1974.

Where is Yenişehir, Nicosia?

Yenişehir spreads north from the Venetian walls of Nicosia, with Mahmutpaşa and Akkavuk on its southern side, Küçükkaymaklı east, and Kızılbaş north.
