What are the main landmarks in Trypiotis?
Trypiotis takes both its name and its chief monument from the Archangel Michael Trypiotis church, which stands on Solonos Street in the old town. The name means maker of the hole. A carved iconostasis by Taliadoros survives inside from the eighteenth century, and an icon of the Archangel Michael in the church dates to 1634.
The Leventis Municipal Museum stands near the parish on Ippokratous Street, the first historical museum on Cyprus when it opened in 1989. Faneromeni lies just north.
What is the history of Trypiotis?
Trypiotis is one of the old parishes of Nicosia's walled town, inside the Venetian walls that the Republic of Venice built between 1567 and 1570. The parish church anchors the record. An inscription beside its south porch dates the rebuilding to 1695, paid for by Priest Iakovos and the congregation, and older fabric was folded into the standing walls rather than cleared away.
A municipal school took the name Astiki Trypiotou in the 1911-12 school year. Cypriot census tables list Trypiotis from 1891, though the counts of 1931, 1960, 1973, and 1976 fold it into larger units.
