About Taht-el-kale, Nicosia

Where to stay in Taht-el-kale, Nicosia
Where you base yourself shapes the visit — here's the character of each area.
Taht-el-kale splits into two halves for anyone hunting a bed near the Famagusta Gate. Famagusta Street carries the walled-city side, the run of frontages Louis Salvator ranked second only to Ledra Street in 1881, and the old stone doorways along it stand minutes from the gate. The other half lies outside.
That ground came into the quarter in 1923, past the Caraffa bastion and the moat, where the Venetian circuit no longer boxes the street plan in. Choose the walled side if you want the gate on your doorstep.
About Taht-el-kale, Nicosia
What are the main landmarks in Taht-el-kale, Nicosia?
Taht-el-kale keeps the Famagusta Gate, the Venetian arch the Ottomans read as the lower part of the fortress. Porta Giuliana opened in 1567, and its vaulted passage rises into a spherical dome eleven metres across, entered through the rounded orillon of the Caraffa bastion beside it. The moat below once ran with the Pedieos, turned from its bed to fill it.
The Taht-el-Kale Mosque and its Koran School stand inside the walls, raised in 1826 for Es-Seyyid Mehmet Agha, three round arches across the front and a minaret rebuilt in 1948. Famagusta Street links the two.
What is the history of Taht-el-kale, Nicosia?
Taht-el-kale carries an Ottoman name meaning the lower part of the fortress, given for the Famagusta Gate the quarter sits beneath. The word wore down. Cypriots came to say Tahtakale and Tahtagala instead, and the quarter grew into one of the largest mixed neighbourhoods among the 24 historic quarters inside the Venetian walls.
A municipal order of 1923 carried the boundary out past the Caraffa bastion. Prayer returned to the Taht-el-Kale Mosque on 3 June 2014, when the mufti Talip Atalay led a service after fifty-one silent years.
Where is Taht-el-kale, Nicosia?
Taht-el-kale holds the eastern end of the walled city of Nicosia and the ground beyond the Caraffa bastion. Chrysaliniotissa adjoins it on the north and west.
