Göçmenköy is a residential quarter of shops, schools, and a municipal park rather than a hotel district, so a stay near it draws on the rest of Nicosia. Two grounds sit at its north end. The quarter suits you if a fixture at Nicosia Atatürk Stadium or a lane in the Atatürk indoor swimming pool sets the shape of your day, because both belong to one complex that any address in the quarter can reach on foot.
Bülent Ecevit Anatolian High School, opened in 1999, sits at the other end. Central North Nicosia lies some three kilometres south-east, while the D.300 runs west toward Gönyeli.

Nicosia Atatürk Stadium marks the north end of Göçmenköy, the largest stadium in Northern Cyprus, opened on 28 January 1990 with a match between Fenerbahçe and Sarıyer. Sarıyer won it 1-0. The Atatürk Sports Complex around it adds an indoor hall for basketball, volleyball, and handball, a swimming pool, and tennis courts.
Göçmenköy Stadium, the smaller ground of Göçmenköy İdman Yurdu, stands nearby on the site of the former Halil İ. Atik Stadı. Bülent Ecevit Square takes its name from a statue at the Y-junction Göçmenköy shares with Taşkınköy.
What is the history of Göçmenköy?
Göçmenköy was farmland with a detergent factory and a Turkish garrison until the Cyprus crisis of 1963-64. Building began in 1966, when the first 32 houses filled within 10 days. With the walled city still overcrowded, the Turkish Cypriot authorities kept building and opened a brick factory in the area to supply the work, and within a decade the quarter was crowded in its own right.
Its people took the name göçmen. After the conflict of 1974 some moved away to other parts of Northern Cyprus while others displaced from the south arrived, and a cinema and the club Göçmenköy İdman Yurdu, founded in 1968, carried its public life.
