About Ayios Antonios, Nicosia

Where to stay in Ayios Antonios, Nicosia
Each area has its own feel; here's who each one suits.
Ayios Antonios is a parish of errands. Ninety-seven streets fill the south-east corner of Nicosia's municipal area, and the quarter's daily business turns on the rebuilt municipal market and the primary school beside it rather than on anything a visitor books. Its old core is walled, its 1923 extension is not.
Stay near Ayios Antonios Street to be at the market when it opens and inside the walls on foot; stay west in Trypiotis or Ayios Savvas to be nearer the middle of the old town.

Ayios Antonios Church stands on Ayios Antonios Street, sunk about three feet below the pavement. Three arched entrances, a tall bell tower and a single aisle make up the church, a gallery runs above the door, and a colonnade rings the irregular courtyard outside. The front carries the date 1736.
Older masonry is built into the walls. The Evgenias and Antoniou Theodotou Primary School and the Ayios Antonios municipal market next to it are the quarter's other landmarks, the market rebuilt and enlarged by the municipality.
What is the history of Ayios Antonios, Nicosia?
Ayios Antonios is one of the 24 historic quarters inside Nicosia's Venetian walls. Those walls went up from 1567, when the Pedieos was pushed outside the line to fill the moat, and the quarter's older ground has sat behind them ever since. The parish church was founded in 1736, though pieces of earlier churches survive inside its own walls.
The 1923 extension carried the boundary out past the fortifications, into the ground between Larnaca Road and the Constanza bastion. Saint Anthony gives the name. Ayandon is its Turkish form.
