What is the history of Albertstadt?
King Albert of Saxony pushed for the new garrison, and the district built in the 1870s took his name. Planners laid it out as a self-contained soldiers' town, with barracks, an arsenal, riding halls, and a hospital set along wide axes north of the old city. It became Germany's largest garrison.
The Royal Saxon Army garrisoned it through the imperial era. Soviet forces later occupied the barracks, a chapter marked by the memorial that still stands on Olbrichtplatz.
Where is Albertstadt?
Albertstadt spreads across a plateau in the north of Dresden, set back above the Elbe that loops through the old town to the south-west. The Innere Neustadt and Äußere Neustadt lie directly below it, linked to the quarter by Königsbrücker Straße, its main spine. Stauffenbergallee crosses it from east to west.
Pine woods edge it to the north. Past that treeline stretches the Dresdner Heide, a broad forest that carries on for kilometres toward the countryside around Dresden.
