Äußere Neustadt, Dresden — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Äußere Neustadt, also called Antonstadt, is the part of Dresden's Neustadt beyond the old city walls, known for its bar and club streets.

About Äußere Neustadt

Where to stay in Äußere Neustadt

Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.

Nightlife decides the choice here. Rooms in the streets around the Martin-Luther-Kirche sit inside the bar and club district that Äußere Neustadt is known for, which suits some travellers and rules the quarter out entirely for others. The Dreikönigskirche side runs calmer.

Beds nearer the Alter Schlachthof Dresden or across toward the Golden Rider keep the walk short without putting the late hours directly under the window.

About Äußere Neustadt

What are the main landmarks in Äußere Neustadt?

Museums outnumber monuments here. The Erich Kästner Museum, the Kraszewski Museum, the Kunsthaus Dresden and the Museum für Sächsische Volkskunst sit within walking distance of one another, and the Dresden Museum of Ethnology and the Kügelgenhaus, Museum der Dresdner Romantik extend the run. Two churches anchor it.

Dreikönigskirche and the Martin-Luther-Kirche give the quarter its towers, while the Alter Schlachthof Dresden, the Dresdner Fußballmuseum and the Automobilmuseum Dresden carry names from an industrial and sporting Dresden.

What is the history of Äußere Neustadt?

The name Antonstadt comes from Anthony, King of Saxony. Äußere Neustadt grew as the part of the Neustadt lying outside the line of the old city walls, which set it apart from the older core inside them. Monuments record later turns. The Rosa-Luxemburg-Denkmal, the Pionierdenkmal in Dresden and the Ehrenmal für die gefallenen Helden der Sowjetarmee all stand in the quarter, alongside the Schillerdenkmal and the Nieritz-Denkmal.

Where is Äußere Neustadt?

Just over a square kilometre of Dresden makes up the quarter, the stretch of Neustadt beyond the former walls, taking in the Martin-Luther-Kirche.
