What is the history of Pillnitz?
Pillnitz grew up around the riverside palace that the Saxon court kept as its summer residence. The Baroque palace, put up in the early eighteenth century in an East-Asian-inspired style, later gave its name to the Declaration of Pillnitz issued here in 1791. The Vineyard Church Pillnitz served the estate.
In time the royal rooms opened as the Schlossmuseum Pillnitz. Alongside them, the Kunstgewerbemuseum Dresden filled the palace wings with its decorative-arts collection.
Where is Pillnitz?
Pillnitz sits on the right bank of the Elbe. It lies several kilometres upstream of central Dresden, with Hosterwitz downstream and the wooded hills of Schönfeld and Reitzendorf rising to the east. Hosterwitzer Straße threads the valley toward the city.
