Hellerau was founded in 1909, a late arrival among the villages of northern Dresden. Where Klotzsche and Rähnitz had grown slowly around old parish churches, Hellerau was set out all at once on open ground to a single plan. The Christophoruskirche gave the new district its parish church.
A memorial stone, the Gedenkstein Kurt Schlosser, stands among the streets nearby. Its original layout still orders the streets.
Where is Hellerau?
The district lies in the far north of Dresden, several kilometres from the centre. Klotzsche borders it to the north. Rähnitz adjoins it to the east, where the Rähnitzer Kirche stands, and Trachenberge with its Vineyard Church Trachenberge lies to the south, closer to the inner city.
