What are the main landmarks in Blasewitz?
The Loschwitz Bridge is the sight most visitors come to see, its blue steel trusses spanning the Elbe between Blasewitz and Loschwitz. On the Blasewitz bank, the Ruderzentrum Blasewitz keeps the rowing tradition of the river alive. Inland, two draws sit among the villa quarters: the Technische Sammlungen Dresden, a museum of technology in Striesen, and the Church of Reconciliation nearby.
Gruna keeps Saint Thomas Church (Gruna, Dresden). Cross the bridge and Loschwitz adds its own churches and small museums.
What is the history of Blasewitz?
Blasewitz began as a fishing and farming village on the Elbe's left bank, well outside the old city of Dresden. Wealth came in the nineteenth century. Merchants and city officials built the garden villas that still line the streets, and the borough gained a reputation as a genteel address away from the smoke of the centre.
The Loschwitz Bridge opened in 1893 and tied the village to Loschwitz across the water. Dresden absorbed the borough early in the twentieth century. Its name travelled further than the river through Friedrich Schiller, who lent a local innkeeper's daughter to the figure of Gustel von Blasewitz in his Wallenstein plays.
Where is Blasewitz?
The borough lies east of Dresden's historic centre, stretched along the left bank of the Elbe. Water marks its northern limit. Its inland quarters run back from the river through Striesen, Seidnitz and Tolkewitz toward Gruna at the southern end.
The Loschwitz Bridge carries the local road crossing to Loschwitz, the wooded slope on the opposite bank.
