What is the history of Dresden-Neustadt?
The north bank was settled first, as the old town of Altendresden, older than the city that grew across the Elbe. A fire in 1685 razed it. Augustus the Strong rebuilt the quarter on a straight Baroque grid, renamed it the Neue Königstadt, and laid out Hauptstraße as its axis, with the Dreikönigskirche and the Golden Rider rising from the same programme.
In the 1800s the Äußere Neustadt filled with tenement streets while Albertstadt grew into one of Germany's largest garrisons. When the 1945 raids flattened the Altstadt, the Äußere Neustadt largely escaped and kept its older houses.
Where is Dresden-Neustadt?
The borough spreads along the north bank of the Elbe, linked to the Altstadt by the Augustusbrücke. Wide Elbe meadows edge the waterfront.
