Innere Neustadt is the historic core of Dresden's right bank, the New Town that faces the older Altstadt across the Elbe. Its center is the Neustädter Markt, where the gilded Golden Rider statue of Augustus the Strong stands at the head of the Augustus Bridge. Everything sits within a few blocks. From the square, the Baroque Hauptstraße runs north toward Albertplatz, past shops and the tower of the Dreikönigskirche.

Innere Neustadt is Dresden's quiet base. It sits a ten-minute walk from the city's main sights, which lie across the Augustus Bridge in the Altstadt. The Königstraße and the streets off the Hauptstraße hold most of the beds, from Baroque townhouse hotels to guesthouses near the Neustädter Markt.
The quarter suits sightseers who want the Church of Our Lady, the Green Vault, and the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister within a short walk, yet a calmer evening than the Äußere Neustadt bar quarter to the north. For more rooms, the Altstadt hotels sit just over the river.

What are the main landmarks in Innere Neustadt?
The district's own set piece is the Golden Rider, the gilded equestrian statue of Augustus the Strong at the Neustädter Markt. A block up the Hauptstraße stands the Dreikönigskirche, a Baroque church with a tall tower over the shopping street. Most of the great museums sit across the Elbe in the Altstadt: the Church of Our Lady, the Green Vault, and the Old Masters gallery, the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister.
The Albertinum and its Galerie Neue Meister and the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden collections lie the same short walk away. All are minutes over the Augustus Bridge.
What is the history of Innere Neustadt?
The right bank began as Altendresden, an old settlement older than the city on the far shore. A fire in 1685 destroyed it. Augustus the Strong had the district rebuilt to a Baroque plan and renamed it the New Town, laying out the broad Hauptstraße and the Neustädter Markt.
His gilded statue, the Golden Rider, was raised at the market in 1736. The bombing of 1945 that gutted the Altstadt scarred this bank as well, and the Baroque frontages of the Hauptstraße were rebuilt in the decades after the war.
Where is Innere Neustadt?
Innere Neustadt occupies the inner right bank of the Elbe, directly across the water from Dresden's Altstadt. The Augustus Bridge links the two banks. It lands at the Neustädter Markt below the Golden Rider, and from there the Baroque Hauptstraße runs inland to Albertplatz, paralleled by the older Königstraße.
North of Albertplatz begins the Äußere Neustadt, the district's bar quarter.
