Cotta is a residential district in the west of Dresden. Its streets mix older tenement blocks with post-war housing, and its best-known draw sits on former railway ground: the Railway Museum Dresden, in the sheds of the old Bahnbetriebswerk Dresden-Altstadt. This is a working part of the city, a short tram ride from the historic centre rather than a sightseeing quarter.

Few travellers plan to sleep in Cotta. Beds here are thin, and this is housing rather than a hotel quarter. What the district offers is a quiet, cheaper base, with trams running east into central Dresden in minutes.
Stay here for space away from the crowds, or for the district's own interests: the Railway Museum Dresden and the Dresdner Energiemuseum for industrial history, or the Elbamare pool for a wet afternoon. For the great galleries and the old town, you still ride into the centre.

Cotta's sights are churches, small museums, and monuments rather than headline attractions. The Railway Museum Dresden, in the old Bahnbetriebswerk Dresden-Altstadt, keeps locomotives and rolling stock, while the Dresdner Energiemuseum and the Schulmuseum Dresden cover power and schooling. For older stone, the Briesnitzer Kirche stands in neighbouring Briesnitz, joined by the Church of Peace, Löbtau.
Two monuments recall the Saxon court: the König-Anton-Denkmal and the Denkmal der Kurfürstin Anna von Sachsen. None of it draws a queue.

Cotta's history sits in its buildings. In neighbouring Briesnitz, the Briesnitzer Kirche rises beside the Burgwall Briesnitz, the earthwork of an early hillfort near the Elbe. The railway age left the Bahnbetriebswerk Dresden-Altstadt, a locomotive depot whose sheds hold the Railway Museum Dresden.
Monuments keep the Saxon court in memory, among them the König-Anton-Denkmal for King Anton and the Denkmal der Kurfürstin Anna von Sachsen for the Electress Anna. A darker chapter shows in the Mahnmal für KZ-Häftlinge.
Where is Cotta?
Cotta sits on the western, left-bank side of Dresden. It covers just under two square kilometres, hemmed by Löbtau toward the centre, by the Gorbitz estate rising to the west, and by Briesnitz reaching north to the Elbe. Across the water lies Kaditz, with its Kläranlage Kaditz.
