The nearest major church is the Kreuzkirche, at the Altmarkt where Prager Straße ends. A few minutes further into the old town stands the Frauenkirche, Dresden's rebuilt dome. Around the Zwinger and the royal palace sit the great collections of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden: the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister for the old masters, and the Green Vault for the Saxon treasury.
The Dresden Cathedral rises beside them. Down by the Elbe, the Albertinum holds the Galerie Neue Meister and its nineteenth-century painting.
What is the history of Prager Straße?
Prager Straße was laid out in 1851 as a grand promenade between the new railway lands and the old town, and it took its name from the road toward Prague. Hotels, cafés, and shops lined it through the imperial decades. The bombing of Dresden in February 1945 destroyed almost the whole street.
Rebuilding came in the 1960s under East German planners, who replaced the ruins with a car-free shopping axis flanked by prefabricated slabs. New shopping centres came after reunification.
Where is Prager Straße?
The promenade lies on the south bank of the Elbe, inside Dresden's Altstadt. Its southern end opens onto Wiener Platz beside Dresden Hauptbahnhof, while the northern end reaches the Altmarkt and the Kreuzkirche. The old core is close.
A short walk northeast brings the Frauenkirche, and across the river in the Neustadt stand the Golden Rider and the Dreikönigskirche.
