The medieval frontier work that runs through Joydens Wood is the earliest thing the record holds for this ground, and the village later called Old Bexley grew separately around the Church of St Mary the Virgin, Bexley, with the Manor House, High Street House, Cray House and Chapel House filling in its street over the centuries that followed. Ruxley kept a church of its own.

St Botolph's Church, Ruxley stands out at the wooded edge of the district still. The great houses belong to a later phase. Hall Place and Gardens, Danson House, Frognal House and the Red House went up in country that London had not yet reached, and their grounds, with Lamorbey Park beside them, survive as much of the open land the borough still has.

Bexleyheath then spread north of the village. When the area was taken into Greater London, the London Borough of Bexley carried the village name across the whole district, which is why Bexley Village and Old Bexley are both still used for the smaller place at its centre.
