What is the history of Braintree?

The halls came before the town. Panfield Hall, Bocking Hall, Rayne Hall and Lyons Hall belong to a countryside of separate manors, and each of them still carries the name of the place it was built to serve. The Old Manor House and Black Notley Lodge stand in the same company.

Bocking kept its own church. The Church of St Mary the Virgin, Bocking and the Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin share a dedication across two settlements, while the Church of All Saints, the Church of St Michael and the Church of St Peter took the parishes nearer the middle. How do you get to Braintree?

Essex roads do the work. Braintree sits at the middle of its district, so the lanes from Bocking, Rayne, Panfield and Black Notley all end up in the same town, and Freeport catches the traffic before it gets there. A car makes the district manageable.
