Picone sits a rail underpass away from Murat rather than inside it. Via Giuseppe Capruzzi runs its northern edge along the Bari Centrale tracks, and the Sottovia Quintino Sella is the road through to the shopping streets on the other side. Piazza Giulio Cesare draws as much traffic as anywhere in the quartiere, for its position and for the Policlinico beside it.
Quartierino keeps to itself behind the conservatory. Stay here if a quiet block and a short ride in matter more to you than a hotel row.

What are the main landmarks in Picone?
The Conservatorio Niccolò Piccinni has stood in Picone since 1957. The school was founded in Bari in 1925, and Nino Rota, who took its directorship in 1950, gave his name to the auditorium built beside it between 1966 and 1981. Piazza Giulio Cesare fronts the Policlinico.
A statue of Padre Pio stands on the square, which was rebuilt over an underground car park and reopened in December 2006.
What is the history of Picone?
Picone grew from the 1950s, when Bari built out past the station tracks onto ground the torrente Picone once skirted. The torrent ran in a lama, a karst channel of the sort that grooves the ground around Bari, and the quartiere carries its name instead. Bari constituted the quartiere in 1970.
Nine years on it went into the III circoscrizione with Poggiofranco, and when that tier was dissolved in 2014 Picone passed to the II municipio.
