Koganei, written 小金井市, was constituted in 1889, and the Tokyo Metropolis reached out to meet it only later. Buildings are the local speciality. The Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum exists because structures facing demolition elsewhere were dismantled, moved and reassembled on one site, which is an unusual way for a city to end up holding other people's past as well as its own.

Two dwellings survive where they stand. The 伊藤家住宅 and the House of Koide are preserved houses rather than collections of objects, and between them they show the domestic scale that the open-air museum reproduces in bulk. Older again is the temple record.

The Musashi Kokubunji Temple Remains Museum keeps what is left of the site that carries the Musashi name into the present. Teaching left its own deposits. The Nature and Science Museum of the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, the Hachirō Yuasa Memorial Museum and the Nippon Veterinary and Life Science University Museum are campus collections rather than civic ones, and finding three of them attached to a city of just over eleven square kilometres says how much of this ground the universities took.

Art arrived last. The Hakenomori Art Museum and, on the wider list, the Fuchū Art Museum and the Kodaira Hirakushi Denchu Art Museum complete a record kept almost entirely in small rooms.

Where is Koganei?
