What is the history of Hachiōji?

The record starts in stone. The Funada Stone Age Site marks occupation on this ground long before any of the administrative names that followed it, and it remains the oldest thing in the city's own list of monuments. Its entry sits among landmarks opened long afterwards.

Tokyo City went first. When the municipal system arrived in 1889, Hachiōji was the second place in Tokyo Prefecture to take it up, and only Tokyo City itself had come before. The paperwork carried a different name. 八王子町 is the official form recorded for the town, and the municipal identity that grew out of it covers 186 square kilometres of the Tokyo Metropolis.

Recognition came slowly. Hachiōji was designated a core city in 2015, the first in the Tokyo Metropolis to be given that rank, and by then it already held more people than any other city in Tokyo outside the special wards. Mount Takao's own turn came earlier, in 2007, when three Michelin stars arrived to the surprise of everyone who lived beneath it.

The Hachiōji City Children's Museum of Science and the Funada Stone Age Site sit at opposite ends of that record, one built for the future and one left by the past.

Where is Hachiōji?

Hachiōji occupies the western portion of the Tokyo Metropolis, where the capital's built ground gives way to hills. Mount Takao is the high point.
