What is Minato City known for?

Minato City is known for Tokyo Tower, the orange lattice that has marked this side of the capital since 1958. Galleries came next. Roppongi alone carries the Mori Art Museum and the National Art Center within a few hundred metres of each other, while the Suntory Museum of Art holds the Midtown complex and the Nezu Museum keeps its garden along Aoyama.

Embassies fill the quiet blocks. Akasaka and Takanawa hold most of them, along with the hotels that grew up to serve them.

What are the main landmarks in Minato City?

Minato City counts Tokyo Tower first, and everything else arranges itself around the hills below it. Roppongi holds the art. The Mori Art Museum sits at the top of one tower, the National Art Center curves along the street below, and the Suntory Museum of Art takes the Midtown side.

Older collections keep to the quieter slopes. The Nezu Museum stands with its garden off Aoyama, the Okura Museum of Art above Toranomon, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum in its own grounds toward Takanawa. The NHK Museum of Broadcasting keeps the hill at Atago.

What is the history of Minato City?

Minato City takes its name from the harbour that once lay open along its eastern edge. The water has moved since. Reclamation pushed the shoreline out across the bay until the canals of Kaigan were all that remained of the old landing, and the ward's name outlived the port it described.

The hills behind were estate ground. Great residences and their gardens covered the slopes at Akasaka, Aoyama and Takanawa, and when those estates were broken up their grounds passed to embassies, ministries and eventually to museums, which is why the Nezu Museum and the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum still sit inside walled gardens. The pattern never really changed.

Diplomatic quarters still follow the old estate lines. Minato City was constituted as a special ward in 1947, drawn together from three older wards. Tokyo Tower went up in 1958.

The lattice on the Shiba slope gave the district a landmark visible from half the capital, and the towers that followed at Roppongi turned a nightlife quarter into a gallery quarter as well. The port name still stands on the map.

Where is Minato City?

Minato City occupies the low hills and the reclaimed shore on the bay side of Tokyo Prefecture. The ground rises and falls constantly. Ridges carry Roppongi, Akasaka and Takanawa well above the streets between them, so short walks in this ward mean steps and slopes, while east of the ridges the land flattens into the made ground of Kaigan and the canals. Chūō adjoins it to the north east.

The bay edge is nowhere far.

What is the climate of Minato City?

Minato City sits close enough to Tokyo Bay for the water to blunt both ends of the year. Winters stay dry and bright. Cold air comes down from the north but the bay keeps hard frost off the reclaimed ground at Kaigan, and snow that settles on the ridges at Roppongi rarely lasts a day.

Summer is the harder season. Heat and humidity bank up between the towers, and the rains of early summer give way to the storms that come up the coast in autumn.

How do you get to Minato City?

Minato City is reached from Shinagawa, one of the capital's Shinkansen gates, on the ward's southern edge. Subway lines do the rest. Several cross under the ridges to Roppongi, Akasaka and Kaigan, and the elevated Yurikamome runs out over the water from the ward's waterfront toward the reclaimed islands.

Monorail trains leave for the airport from the same side. Tokyo Tower is a walk from three separate stations.
