About Musashino

Animation is the through-line.

What is Musashino known for?

The Ghibli Museum pulls the crowds, the Suginami Animation Museum appears on the same regional list, and the Chihiro Art Museum Tokyo supplies a third address for drawn and painted work. Kichijoji is the other answer. That neighbourhood carries most of what a visitor to Musashino actually does, with the Inokashira Park Zoo close at the same end and the Kichijoji Catholic Church marking the streets.

What are the main landmarks in Musashino?

The Ghibli Museum is the name that travels. Behind it the Inokashira Park Zoo, the Kichijoji Catholic Church and the Seikei Gakuen Archives / Museum fill out what Musashino carries close to home, and the NTT History Center of Technologies is the outlier among them. Excavation accounts for the rest.

The Shitanoya Site, the Igusa Site, the 井荻八幡遺跡 and the 御殿山遺跡 are dug ground, with the 伊藤家住宅 and the 井草民俗資料館 preserving what stands above it.

What is the history of Musashino?

Dug ground comes first. The Shitanoya Site, the Igusa Site, the 井荻八幡遺跡 and the 御殿山遺跡 are the excavated entries here, four separate records of use on this ground long before any municipal line was drawn across it. The line arrived in 1889.

Musashino, written 武蔵野市, was constituted in that year, one unit among many in what became the Tokyo Metropolis. Two buildings survive from ordinary life. The 伊藤家住宅 is a preserved dwelling and the 井草民俗資料館 holds the folk record that belongs with it, and between them they cover a domestic past that no gallery attempts.

Religion shows up on the list as well. The Kichijoji Catholic Church and the Church of St. Therese of the Infant Jesus are the named churches on this list, while the Nerima Shakujiikoen Furusato Museum records the neighbouring district on the same roll. Technology is represented once.

The NTT History Center of Technologies is the technical entry, an unexpected subject to find on a list otherwise given to art, animals and archaeology. Drawing arrived last and loudest. The Ghibli Museum, the Chihiro Art Museum Tokyo and the Suginami Animation Museum between them made animation the thing this part of the Tokyo Metropolis is known for, and the Mitaka City Yūzō Yamamoto Memorial Museum, the Seikei Gakuen Archives / Museum and the Middle Eastern Culture Center in Japan share the list without sharing any of that subject.

Where is Musashino?

Musashino is a small city. Eleven square kilometres of the Tokyo Metropolis carry Kichijoji, the Inokashira Park Zoo and the Kichijoji Catholic Church inside a single walkable frame, which is why so much of a visit happens on foot. Excavation marks the older layer.

The Shitanoya Site, the Igusa Site, the 井荻八幡遺跡 and the 御殿山遺跡 fix four points of dug ground, and the neighbouring districts add the Suginami Animation Museum and the Nerima Shakujiikoen Furusato Museum.

What is the climate of Musashino?

Temperate, and mostly beside the point. A wet afternoon belongs to the Ghibli Museum, the Chihiro Art Museum Tokyo and the NTT History Center of Technologies, three indoor collections that ask nothing at all of the sky. Fine weather changes the plan.

The Inokashira Park Zoo becomes the obvious call, with the Shitanoya Site and an unhurried walk through Kichijoji filling out the rest of it.

How do you get to Musashino?

Kichijoji is the name to aim for. That neighbourhood is where a visit to Musashino usually starts, and it puts the Ghibli Museum, the Inokashira Park Zoo and the Kichijoji Catholic Church within a short walk of one another. The city is quickly crossed.

Eleven square kilometres leave the Seikei Gakuen Archives / Museum, the NTT History Center of Technologies and the Shitanoya Site inside one unhurried day.
