Ilsandong
Ilsandong District, or Ilsandong-gu, is the eastern half of the old Ilsan-gu in Goyang, South Korea, split from Ilsanseo District in 2005.Where to stay →About Goyang-si
Ilsan carries the modern half.
What is Goyang-si known for?
The planned town fills the Ilsandong and Ilsanseo districts, and Hallyuwood belongs to the same late chapter in a municipality that grew into one of the larger centres of the Seoul Metropolitan Area. Royal tombs carry the older half. Seooreung and Seosamneung gather the burial ground, while Haengjusanseong keeps the fortified hill that predates every district line drawn since.
What are the main landmarks in Goyang-si?
Tombs dominate the register. Seooreung and Seosamneung are the two groups that gather most of them, and Gyeongneung, Changneung and Myeongneung head the longer list of individual tombs recorded here. Yereung and Hyoreung follow.
The register adds 익릉 and 홍릉, then 희릉, while 회묘 stands apart from the royal set. Bukhansan supplies the high ground. Haengjusanseong holds a fortified hill of its own, Jungheungsa and the Goyang Heungguksa Temple Daebang carry the Buddhist thread with the hanging painting 고양 대성암 아미타삼존괘불도, and Hallyuwood answers for the modern city.
What is the history of Goyang-si?
The hill at Haengju came first. Haengjusanseong fortified rising ground long before any of the districts around it were named, and the later Goyang Haengju Cathedral and the Goyang Hangju Water Level Observatory both took the same place name with them. Royal burial followed.
Seooreung and Seosamneung turned a stretch of this ground into funerary landscape, and the tombs kept here, Gyeongneung, Changneung, Myeongneung, Yereung, Hyoreung, 익릉, 홍릉 and 희릉 among them, give the city more of that kind of monument than most of its neighbours hold. Temples worked alongside the tombs. Jungheungsa and the Goyang Heungguksa Temple Daebang carried the Buddhist establishment, and the hanging painting recorded as 고양 대성암 아미타삼존괘불도 belongs to the same tradition, while 회묘 sits apart from the royal groups.
Paper survives too. The account books listed as 개성 복식부기 장부 preserve Kaesong double-entry bookkeeping and the banner 색복 장려 깃발 records a campaign about what people wore, both of them documentary rather than built. Then Ilsan was planned.
Laying out a new town across the Ilsandong and Ilsanseo districts, with Deogyang District left closer to Seoul, gave Goyang the shape it carries within the Seoul Metropolitan Area, and Hallyuwood, Byeolmuri Stadium and The National Women's History Exhibition Hall arrived with that chapter.
Where is Goyang-si?
Three districts divide the city. Ilsandong and Ilsanseo hold the planned town of Ilsan while Deogyang District lies closer to Seoul, and together they spread over some 267 square kilometres of Gyeonggi Province. Bukhansan raises the far edge.
Between that mountain and the low ground where the Goyang Hangju Water Level Observatory stands, Goyang runs from slope to floodplain inside a single municipal boundary of the Seoul Metropolitan Area.
What is the climate of Goyang-si?
Bukhansan takes the weather first. High ground catches what the flat districts only feel later, which is why a day that looks settled from the middle of Ilsan can turn awkward on the mountain and around the exposed tomb enclosures at Seooreung. Indoor days have their uses.
The National Women's History Exhibition Hall and Hallyuwood carry them, and the Goyang Hangju Water Level Observatory is a reminder that the low ground has its own seasonal business with water.
How do you get to Goyang-si?
Arrivals come out of Seoul. Goyang belongs to the Seoul Metropolitan Area and Deogyang District lies nearest the capital, so most visitors enter from that side and then cross the city rather than approaching it from the province behind. Ilsan is the far target.
Reaching the Ilsandong and Ilsanseo districts, Hallyuwood or Byeolmuri Stadium means covering a good part of 267 square kilometres, and Bukhansan, Seooreung and Seosamneung each sit off on their own edge again.
